Katrina Brought Billions of Dollars – and Quite a Bit of Fraud

Hurricane Katrina was a huge disaster that attracted volunteers and fraudsters alike. In both camps were outsiders and homegrown residents.

By 2011, the  Hurricane Katrina Fraud Task Force, later renamed the Disaster Fraud Task Force, said it had prosecuted 1,439 people in half the country's 94 federal judicial districts for illegal activity related to hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma. The cases involved charity scams, government and private-sector benefit fraud, identity theft, contract and procurement fraud and old-fashioned political corruption.
