Britain’s major banks are laying customers open to life-changing fraud thanks to a failure to invest in new technology, a refusal to alter staff working patterns to better combat crime and by “allowing fraudulent accounts to proliferate." 

What is more, the main response of banks to an explosive increase in fraud has been to take a tough line on customers – forcing them to bear sole responsibility for the losses. Such are the allegations made against banks by consumer groups, lawyers and fraud experts.
