Malaysia’s prime minister, Najib Razak, has acquired sweeping powers of arrest and detention amid demands that he step down over a multimillion-dollar embezzlement scandal.

Rights activists denounced the National Security Council Act, which came into law yesterday, as a draconian measure with the potential to infringe human rights.

The legislation is framed as a measure against terrorism, and allows the prime minister to declare “security areas” in which civil liberties are suspended.
